Check out the long list of a various professional singers known to have their vocal nodules surgically treated:
Justin Timberlake, Mylie Cyrus, Celine Dion, Adele, Björk, Shirley Manson, Keith Urban, John Mayer, Rod Stewart, Julie Andrews, Steven Tyler, Roger Daltrey, Paul Stanley, Sam Smith, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, Ian Anderson, Dan Reynolds, Nicki Minaj, Willie Nelson, Gary Allan, Shania Twain and Christina Perri. And there are many more!
A vocal fold nodule is a mass of tissue that grows on a vocal fold. The nodules appear as symmetrical swellings on both vocal cords. The cause of these formations is usually strenuous or abusive voice practices such as yelling, poor singing techniques, and coughing. Symptoms include hoarseness, painful speech production, frequent vocal breaks, and reduced vocal range.
If you are a vocalist looking for answers to avoid becoming a victim, you will find a “zillion” opinions about how to prevent Vocal Nodes.
Alongside my video and film production work, I have also have a BA in Vocal Music Education with credentials and have coached vocal technique now for over 30 years, a few thousand students for sure. Since I was not naturally blessed with an amazing natural instrument, I had to work and study hard to refine the techniques that now allow my limited voice to perform in much higher ranges with power and full control.
I will not divulge all my coaching secrets in a Blog but let’s perform a little test:
“When you breath in and out normally, does the top of your chest generally rise upward and your lower abdomen moves inward? If so, then there is no way to properly control your voice.”
Celine Dion is listed above. I am a big fan. Click on the link below and watch this video of her singing the Titanic theme. When you get to the close ups, watch her breathing. Top of chest up! Wrong technique. Further, her phrasing (time when she breathes) happens to often. I am not surprised she had eventually surgery and is still having major problems. I have worked with numerous singers like her. It takes about 3-6 months and they all built a new voice with no more tension and pain.
Look at the tension in the neck of Roger Daltry. (Again, I am a big fan) If your neck has any tension when you sing or speak, you are doing something wrong. Vocal Nodules may be in your future. They were in his and he has lost his upper range like many of his Rock Singing peers.
You don’t see that tension in the neck on my fellow CSUF classmate, Opera Star, Deborah Voigt. She and most Opera performers sing their high notes into their 70’s! One must ask why that is. (no, I’m not trying to say you need to sing Opera)
All these common issues can be resolved and a new voice built naturally. One of my passions is to work closely with public speakers and singers privately and online to help them become confident, powerful and controlled vocalists.
